TheProcess, & FAQ's

  • Things to consider.

Is this a family heirloom? If so, you are in the right place. I strictly focus on antique and vintage restorations, often times using period inspired materials to keep the piece as close to a time capsule as possible. But will also have just as much fun playing with bright and fun contemporary fabrics to breathe a new life into it.

Very important - is this piece in a high traffic area? Have children or pets? There are spill proof materials and performance fabrics available that we can discuss.

Unforeseen condition issues or excessive upholstery that I receive ( staples, tacks etc. ) may come to my attention once a piece is in the studio and the old upholstery has been removed. At this point I will contact the customer and inform them of the recommended course of action and how much it would cost to repair with additional labor hours.

  • "How much does it cost?"

This is very similar to the "How long will it take?" question. Before I tear down I will provide you with how much yardage you will need. From there you can browse Green House Fabrics and reach out with the swatches you would like to see pricing on ( the average cost is $48-$60/yard but performance and designer material can be $135+ / yard )

As Im tearing down the piece, more than likely we will need to replace all the foam and foundation material like webbing/springs/burlap etc. If this occurs I will reach out at each step.

All in all - Upholstery is not cheap, it's an investment.

  • "How long will it take?"

This is all dependent on the piece. I will give a rough estimated time but won't know for sure until I start tearing into it.

As Im tearing down, I'm already processing how Im going to rebuild so will have a closer idea of the ETA during that stage.

At the moment, I'm only accepting a limited number of pieces so if you are interested in scheduling a consultation with me and getting your piece in the schedule, please fill out the contact form with as many details as you can provide.

  • "What type of fabric should I choose?"

Fabrics I recommend using include: Jacquard, Chenille, heavy weight velvets, mohair, tweed, wool, *leather* labor costs increase here* marine vinyl and anything classified as “Heavy Weight” or Home Decor material.

( When bringing in your own material, I charge an additional $15/yard to work with it - in many cases here, I need to properly finish the edging of the fabric before sewing to ensure it does not fray )

// Have a fabric already in mind? Please be sure to send a photo as well as the type of fabric it is.

// Patterned fabrics increase labor hours for planning out matching.* Avoid silks, linen and rayon blends. Please click the button below to view my fabric offerings/inspiration board and for more details for ordering samples.

  • "I thought upholstery is like DIY...should be cheaper right?"

A remark I have received more than once. After I review photos, the condition of a piece and consider the materials needed, the cost adds up quickly.

While yes, I definitely "do this myself"...this is a true craft that has taken many years of time invested to ensure the quality of work will last. Upholstery is 100% custom work.

  • "I found this lovely chair on the street..."

This can be a sketchy game to play so here are a few things to keep in mind before you come to the rescue.

Really look it over. I've done this same thing, to find serious frame damage once I get it stripped down.

Does it make loud creaking noises? If so, the springs could be undone and in need of repair or the arms/legs could be loose and in need of tightening. But you won't know until all the material is torn down if it's fully recovered.

Are there some questionable staining on the fabric? If you're noticing any stains, the moisture from being outside seeps into the foundational material like foam. If it's a vintage piece and you can hear a "crunch" when you poke around, that's a solid indication of deteriorated latex foam ( they used this prior to polyurethane foam in midcentury furniture ) and you will need to completely replace.

If you’re unsure and interested in re-upholstering a piece you found on the side of the road or at a second hand shop, feel free to send me a message and I’ll be happy to look it over!

  • "Do you offer refinishing or repairs?"

I only make simple repairs to the frames such as wobbly legs and surface touch ups. I do not offer refinishing work.

Once I get the piece fully torn down and discover more intensive frame repair that is out of my skill-set, I will document photos and have you take it to a local furniture repair shop.
